Why don’t you offer free shipping like other sites?
UPS and FedEx are not free! We asked them; they said NO! Obviously the cost of shipping is included in the price of the furniture on other sites. Built to Last is a factory-direct operation and we have a lot of loyal customers in our immediate area who purchase furniture at our outlet showroom or are in our delivery range. Understandably, we do not charge them inflated “free shipping” prices. Our furniture prices are what they are and the shipping costs are what they are. Please note: Ground Shipping rates apply only to the continental US. Please contact us for rates to AK and HI.
Do you ship to Canada?
Yes we do. Please contact us for a shipping quote – we’ll need your city and postal code.
What is your furniture made of?
All of our furniture is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is resistant to corrosive substances, oil and fuels, insects, fungi, salt spray, and other environmental stresses. It does not absorb moisture and it will not rot, splinter, crack, or fade. Our furniture is not resin or a composite. Resin tends to get a chalky film, will begin to disintegrate from the sun, will fade, and is very lightweight. Composite, which is used for many decks these days, is better for structural purposes and tends to fade.
So it’s built to last ... for how long?
The durability of the 120 chairs we built in 1990 (when this was just a hobby) is the reason we’re building furniture now on a full-time basis. The HDPE plastic is proving to be far superior to wood or composites. We have every reason to believe all of your future purchases will be for additional furniture, not replacement furniture.
How do I keep the furniture clean?
Usually just spraying them with water will remove any dust, dirt or pollen that has accumulated. Pressure washing is the best solution for stubborn dirt or mildew, or for spring cleaning, but be sure to spread out the stream of water – too sharp a spray may “feather” the surface of the plastic. Clorox Cleanup or Tilex is a good solution – spray it on and let it sit awhile, scrub if necessary and then rinse. For mold and mildew we highly recommend a product called Wet & Forget available at Costco and Sam’s Club or online at Amazon.
What is your warranty?
We will match any competitor’s warranty.
What is your return policy?
At the risk of jinxing ourselves … we haven’t needed a formal return policy, “knock on plastic”. Since 1999, when we officially launched Built to Last, we have had only one chair returned for credit, and that from a customer who bought four but could only fit three on his patio, and he LOVES those! Bottom line, we stand behind our 100% customer satisfaction guarantee.
What does “LTL” mean?
LTL is a shipping term meaning “Less than Truck Load”. We are able to ship fully assembled furniture by freight if you do not want to deal with boxed furniture requiring reassembly shipped by UPS Ground. Some of our furniture, such as the Octagonal Picnic Table and Dining Set, require LTL shipping. Prices for LTL shipping vary based on weight and destination but generally range from 15% to 30% of the purchase price of the furniture.
Will the colored plastic fade?
No. The plastic is UV protected and the plastic is solid colored throughout every piece.
Why is your plastic adirondack chair heavier than others?
Our chair design is based on structural integrity and comfort. It is not based on minimizing weight for shipping or oversimplifying the design and assembly as a selling point. We don’t skimp on the materials. Our frames are made of 2×4 and 2×6 for structural integrity. Furniture made with thinner material will be flimsy from the start. We have rear legs to support the back instead of the arms wrapping around the back. Our chairs are also roomier than most which means we use more material overall.
What type of hardware do you use?
All of our fasteners are made of marine-grade 316 stainless steel.
Where are you able to deliver assembled furniture?
Generally speaking, our delivery area spans from anywhere in the Outer Banks (OBX) of NC (Corolla to Hatteras, and sometimes Ocracoke) and up to the Tidewater area in VA. We occasionally make deliveries to the Richmond, VA area as well. Other special arrangements have been made in the past (in other VA/NC areas) so please call if you have any questions as to whether or not we would be able to deliver to you.
Do you sell cushions?
Yes! Since our furniture is much larger than most outdoor furniture, we have cushions that are custom made just for us. The material used is Sunbrella/Outdura (which is specially made for outdoor furniture as it retains its color and strength, withstands sunlight and rain, resists mildew, rot, chlorine and other atmospheric chemicals, and is easy to clean) with cumulus fiber inside (this special fiber is perfect for outdoor cushions because it drains easily, doesn’t hold moisture and is mildew resistant.)
What are you recommendations for winter storage?
Don’t bother! The beauty of this material and furniture is such that no special treatment is needed. There is no need to store it, cover it or otherwise “protect” this furniture from winter elements (cold, precipitation, or wind).
Can the plastic furniture be painted?
Yes and No. Basically nothing will adhere to HDPE including paint. That is one reason we offer so many colors. Many of you have expressed an interest in painting some small designs like flowers or beach items. It is possible to prepare the surface through a process called activation where the surface is oxidized by passing the flame of a propane torch over the area you want to paint. Use tape to isolate the area to be painted and do not over-torch! You should consult a specialty paint store for paint recommendations.
Do you sell plans or templates for your chairs?
Sorry, but no. We only sell the completed furniture.
